Few scholars in Islamic history have moved hearts the way Imam Abu'l-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi (508–597 AH) did from the pulpits of sixth-century Baghdad. Seeds of Admonishment and Reform is the fifth work in Dar as-Sunnah's series drawn from his writings, gathering short, pointed lessons — harvested from the Book and the Sunnah — that were composed to counsel the intellect and reform the heart. Each is arranged with the care of a master preacher and expressed in language that has kept its power across more than eight centuries.

The subject of the book is the human condition itself: how easily a person is diverted by the glitter of a passing world, and how quickly he forgets the purpose for which he was created. Ibn al-Jawzi writes with the directness of a man addressing his congregation, pressing the reader to weigh his priorities honestly before it is too late. He relates the words of one of the Salaf, who warned that a person's need for his portion of the Hereafter is greater than his need for his portion of this world — for whoever secures the next life is granted this one along with it, while whoever chases this life alone stands to lose them both. It is precisely this reorientation — away from the fleeting and toward the everlasting — that the book sets out to achieve.

Across its chapters the author takes up the themes that every believer must confront: sincere repentance, the purification of intention, patience in trial, gratitude in ease, the certainty of death, and the reckoning that follows it. He lays bare the deceptions of Shaytan and the excuses of the lower self, diagnosing the diseases of the heart with the insight of a physician and prescribing, in each case, a remedy rooted in revelation. Nothing here is abstract; the lessons speak to the distractions, temptations, and heedlessness that press upon Muslims today no less than they did in the author's own age.

What sets this work apart is the marriage of scholarship and feeling. Ibn al-Jawzi does not merely inform — he stirs. His words jolt the heart, moisten the eye, and renew the resolve to return to Allah and aspire to loftier goals. Faithfully rendered into clear English, the translation preserves the urgency and beauty of the original, making one of the author's most affecting works available to the contemporary reader without losing its soul.

Compact enough to read in a few sittings yet rich enough to return to for a lifetime, this is a book to keep close and revisit whenever the heart grows heavy or heedless. It is an ideal companion for personal reflection, a valuable text for study circles and the classroom, and a ready source of material for khateebs and teachers. It also makes a meaningful gift for anyone — new Muslim or lifelong believer — seeking to strengthen their faith and reform their character upon the guidance of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
