The Principles of Leadership

أصول الإمامة

Dr. Yusuf bin 'Uthman Al-Huzaim sets out the principles of leadership from Islamic heritage alongside the modern American management experience — without resting the principles on Western philosophy, but drawing on that literature where it agrees with the truth. Character and ethics come before technique.

The management shelf is enormous and almost entirely Western. Dr. Yusuf bin 'Uthman Al-Huzaim's response is neither to adopt it wholesale nor to reject it, and the distinction he draws is worth understanding before reading.

His Method

He does not rely on Western philosophy to establish leadership principles — those he derives from the Qur'an and Sunnah. He does draw on the Western literature, for two reasons: to demonstrate the sheer volume of work that exists on the subject, and to take from it wherever it agrees with the truth.

The first reason carries a pointed observation aimed at the Arab world, on its lack of specialized works in this field. That is a criticism from inside rather than a complaint about outsiders.

What the Book Covers

An Islamic framework for leadership, built on the Qur'an and Sunnah, setting out the qualities and attributes that make a leader effective in an Islamic context.

Character and ethics, which the book places before technique. Integrity, honesty, humility and justice are treated as the substance of leadership rather than as desirable extras, with examples drawn from the lives of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.

That ordering is the book's central argument. A great deal of leadership writing treats character as a nice-to-have alongside the real work of strategy and execution. Here it is the foundation, and everything else is built on it.

Who It Is For

Imams and masjid boards. Directors of Islamic schools and organizations. Muslim professionals in management. Community leaders and youth workers. Anyone responsible for other people who would like a framework that comes from his own tradition and is not embarrassed by the modern literature.
